Check prices and availability here. North Coast Cottage, approximately a 1 hour 30 minute drive from Inverness, is nestled in the quaint village of Portgower by Helmsdale. There are quite a few accommodation options within it, but we’ve also included several before and just after it so you can still have that remote nature setting rather than be in the town itself. Whether you are taking a road trip along this famous route or staying for a week or two in one of its scenic spots, you’ll enjoy a holiday in a breathtaking setting. Park House Bed and Breakfast | A great cheap and cheerful North Coast 500 B&B in the centre of Lochinver, with super helpful hosts. Gairloch Highland Lodge | Built in the 1980s (and perhaps not redecorated since…), the Gairloch Highland Lodge is however an affordable, traditional accommodation ideal for large groups, hillwalkers and dog lovers. You can then easily take day trips with the car between the three villages and the surrounding areas (it’s just 29 miles from Durness - Tongue, 13 miles Durness - BettyHill), and enjoy not having to pack up for a morning and night on the route. We might as well mention here that you should not underestimate the Highland Mile, and a mile on the North Coast 500 is not the same as one on the M25 in terms of driving time and conditions. In addition to 11 delightful en-suite rooms, they also have a lively bar and restaurant selling excellent local food. Before we start to answer the question of ‘Where should I stay on the North Coast 500?’, it's really important to note a few quirks and realities about what North Coast 500 accommodation entails: Bed & Breakfasts, and traditional family-run guesthouse are the most common type of accommodation. Booking ahead is essential, especially if driving the North Coast 500 in the June-August summer season. The Granny Flat @ St Mary's | A much more traditional option in comparison, but this places is a fantastic value option in Tain. With three bedrooms and a large enclosed garden it's perfectly set up for a family too. Also has an excellent restaurant. This one level cottage has a private garden and boasts fantastic sea views. The Cabin at Mackay's | We mentioned Mackay's earlier, but in case you went straight to the self-catering section, we wanted to mention their stunning cabin, with self-catering facilities, here too. Poolewe Hotel | Originally a coasching inn dating back to 1570, Poolewe Hotel is a traditional highland hotel and restaurant, on the shores of Loch Ewe in sight of Inverewe Gardens. However, we feel the best are in and around Thurso and in John O’Groats, rather than in the town itself, so have included nearby Melvich, Castletown, and Dunnet. Scrobit's Pile |  A dog friendly, self contained, self-catering one bedroom apartment, Scorbit's Pile is a tranquil and cosy woodland retreat ideal for exploring the stunning West Highlands. Large open plan space with original beams throughout, it's a time capsule with a modern update! With nods to its Highland and maritime heritage combined with the simplicity of Nordic design, it is an example of contemporary coastal living. Hillside Scottish Retreat | Half a mile from the village of Helmsdale, this high-spec 3-bedroom, 6-bed cottage is a lovely option for families and large groups at the start or end of the route. Nestled below a single-track road amongst trees and by the shores of Loch Broom, this wooden structure is finished to a high standard with sweeping 180 degree views over the Highlands. It is a short walk to the city centre in a residential area, but also a lot better value than many others Airbnbs in the centre, who take advantage of the amount of tourist traffic in summer with craaazy prices- take a look + view availability here. Most famous for its bridge, which you’ll be seeing a lot of if you’ve been researching this road trip, Kylesku is also home to a couple of great boutique accommodation options and one of the best seafood restaurants along the North Coast 500. You can book a one-bed cabin here, or go for a three-bed seaview cabin, which sleeps six people. It is possible to get this down to about £60 / night if you book early, focus on price instead of location & aesthetics, or are not bothered about staying anywhere particularly special on the route. Caladh Ur Apartment | This small and cosy apartment - about a 20 minute walk to Ullapool - is in a quiet, secluded neighbourhood overlooking Loch Broom. Puffin Cottage | One for the animal lovers, this quirky, quaint and super cute B&B is also home to a petting zoo - to which you get free, unlimited access during your stay! The only problem is that it has limited accommodation options, so it may sometimes be necessary for you to choose somewhere further along the route or stay at foot of the the mountain pass and leave your ascent for the following morning! The old days of the Highlands having vast stretches of gastronomic desert are gone and now there are prize-winning hotels, cafes and restaurants strung along the scenic tourist route.
